André J de Saint Phalle

I'm André J de Saint Phalle, a 73-year-old memoirist living in Vermont's Green Mountains, writing about the collision between French aristocratic legacy and Irish immigrant resilience, and what it takes to finally stop running. My memoir trilogy The Spaces Between tracks fifty years—from hitchhiking 4,000 miles across America in 1973 to finding stillness in rural Vermont through seizures, love, and acceptance. The first book, Surfing the Interstates, was published in 2025 and chronicles that original journey: Jerry Garcia blessing my guitar, UFOs off Bixby Bridge, peyote ceremonies in redwood groves, and a vision quest in a Big Bend canyon that pointed toward water and the woman who moves like tides.I'm the nephew of sculptor Niki de Saint Phalle, whose art and fierce spirit became my unexpected guardian angel. My grandfather André de Saint Phalle built a $33 million Wall Street banking empire before the 1929 crash. My father was a Harvard-educated financier who raised six children like racehorses, demanding perfection before abandoning us all. My mother Joannie Furlong was a Cambridge girl who lost her father at twelve and created a world of unconditional love that saved us.I've been making photographs for over fifty years and spent decades as an award-winning wedding photographer. I play guitar, build multi-track recordings in my home studio, and share my life with two dogs and my wife Veronica, whom I met through my golden retriever in 1997.This is where you'll find my memoir work, current writing, photography, music, and the stories of everyone I've loved and lost.Welcome to the spaces between.
